There comes a time.
Some of you may remember driving before the seat belt laws went into effect, and getting used to that sensation of having to wear one. At first it was an annoyance. Now? I feel strange not wearing one as if I have forgotten something. My wonderful, vibrant, ‘looks like she’s 65 but is turning 80’ mom now wears something that reminds me of seatbelts. She wears a personal emergency alert pendant around her neck. It’s tiny, light, easily worn under her shirt and gives us all peace of mind now that she is living alone.
Last week my sure footed mother was walking out to her car when she noticed heavy snow on one of the tree branches. She’s in a Garden Club, so she had to help the tree. As she reached to clear the snow, she slipped and fell into a 3 foot snow bank. It was icy and the snow was such that she couldn’t get out. And no one could see her. She was in the snow for 45 minutes and could have been there for hours except she pushed her handy dandy alert button. It is connected to ADT, her alarm service. They called her and with no response they called EMT and then they called her family. By the time I called mom the EMT was there and she was inside right as rain. It was a non event, because she wears this pendant. An event that indeed made my heart stop at first and gave me at least two more wrinkles, but I digress.
The biggest hurdle is convincing those we love that it is a good time and a smart move to do this. How about reminding them of the seat belt laws? It’s simply smart, effortless and could save a life, to say nothing of family peace of mind. This isn’t about how capable or old someone is. This is about creating a safety net against random accidents -- which of course makes this info perfect for Random Scoop. My mom asked me to share this story with you and then she laughed. I think she gets a kick out of Facebook and such!
